Stand up against sitting too much at work🚀
Time to read: 5 minutes
Did you know that we in the Netherlands are champions? Yes...champion sitting! Whether at school, at work, in the car or on the couch at home, we in the Netherlands sit a lot and often. The Netherlands belongs to the top of Europe. No less than 45.6 per cent of Dutch people over 15 sit for an average of 7 hours or more per day!
Ban the chair? 🛑
What is the easiest way to ensure that we sit less? Right, by banning chairs! In Norway, an elementary school has traded school chairs for skippy balls to reduce the wiggling of students. Not eager to use a skippy ball? Then using a standing desk is a good alternative. The alternation between sitting and standing is associated with increased alertness and focus.
Alternative ways🥾
If you don't want to get rid of all your desks right now, there are, of course, other possibilities! Walk around the office once an hour to get an extra cup of coffee or tea. This will keep your muscles flexible and strong and give you more energy to get to work!
In addition to walking to the coffee machine, taking a walk outside during working hours can have several positive effects. For example, walking increases creativity, concentration and energy levels and improves overall health.
Challenge each other! 🥳
Take pictures of your walk, create your standing desk or get that skippy ball out of the attic again. Share your experiences with your colleagues so that together we become champions of exercise! Did you know that on NewU, you can share photos of your challenges with colleagues!
